Software as a Service (SaaS)

The Next Wave of Technology: Software as a Service

Software as a Service (SaaS) is one of the most dynamic and growing areas of cloud computing, and represents a major shift in how end users approach their day-to-day processes. Instead of running applications on your own servers, SaaS allows for the creation of an infrastructure to deliver hosted applications over the Internet, which are typically purchased on a monthly or annual basis for a service fee; rather than buying a license outright.

Why Now?

SaaS has always been a desirable model of distribution, but there have been roadblocks in the past. Easy access was not always possible in the days before broadband. While high-speed Internet in the office made hosted software practical in that environment, in reality, the workday seldom ends when we leave the office. Taking work home and doing it over a dial-up line was a deal breaker. Today, broadband access is nearing universal status, which makes it much more practical; allowing workers to work remotely from virtually any location in the United States, or even in the world.

The SaaS Advantage

One of the greatest advantages of SaaS and hosted applications is that the maintenance is shifted from the user to the provider. The time and expense involved in installing updates and patches is eliminated, since this is handled automatically on the back end. This also provides for a major security advantage. One of the biggest security problems today is untimely software updates; when these can be managed on an ongoing basis as the patches become available, without intervention from the internal IT department, then the user is assured that each application is always up to date.

Another advantage of course is financial. It is no longer necessary to purchase software outright, and it is no longer necessary to host them on internal servers or to store data on internal storage facilities. This relieves a burdened IT department from having to manage those servers, and also has the advantage of allowing smaller businesses to gain access to high-end applications and features that would otherwise be too expensive to run on an internally hosted platform.

SaaS Applications

SaaS applications run from ordinary productivity applications and office suites, to more mission-critical applications, to areas such as unified communications and hosted VoIP. In fact, communications is one of the most practical and widely used applications for SaaS today.
